| Logistics base in the greater Sapporo area to open the door to the new
age of globalization in Hokkaido. In Hokkaido, which has vast tracts of land, an abundance of nature, and is surrounded by the sea on all four sides, marine transportation accounts for more than 90% of freight shipments with Honshu and almost all international freight shipments. In Japan, people consider the transition from conventional land transportation to marine transportation, whose burden on the environment is smaller, to be increasingly important, and the roles that ports and harbors play have become vital. Ishikari Bay New Port is located almost in the middle of the coast along Ishikari Bay overlooking the Sea of Japan in Hokkaido. As the closest port to Sapporo, Ishikari Bay New Port serves as the base for physical distribution in the greater Sapporo area and that of economic exchanges with coastal areas along the Sea of Japan and northern region countries. Improvement of Ishikari Bay New Port is recognized as a development project that will lead to the long-term and substantial development of Hokkaido. In the hinterland, measuring approximately 3,000 ha in total, more than 700 companies are concentrated, establishing a production and distribution base with the port as its core. In addition, the volume handled by the regular container cargo service that has been in service with Pusan Port since 1997 has recently increased significantly. Thus, Ishikari Bay New Port has steadily developed as a port that is indispensable for the development of the central Hokkaido area centering on Sapporo. Since being authorized as a special ward for port physical distribution and designated as a recycling-oriented port, Ishikari Bay New Port has been redoubling its efforts to promote port improvement and utilization to accommodate the diversifying needs of physical distribution. Port improvement has been actively promoted with the aim of establishing a base of international physical distribution together with the realization of a recycling-oriented society. |
